Teach with us!

Girls Write Nashville Teaching Artists are vital members of our team, leading group programs in our partner schools and mentoring young artists. Our teaching artists are accomplished artists who believe in teaching as a peak of artistic achievement and vital to the perpetuation of human culture.

“If I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent I know they possess, then my monument will be in their work.”

— Augusta Savage

Augusta Savage was a prominent American sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She was also a teacher whose studio was important to the careers of a generation of artists who would become nationally known.

MNPS Writers Guilds Teaching Artist

Girls Write Nashville After-school Writers Guilds in MNPS Title I schools serve middle school students in a group-setting that meets weekly from September-April. Teaching artists guide a group of up to 15 youth in a weekly program on-site at school from October - May every year. Additional teaching artists serve as substitutes, lead instrument workshops, and/or help students record. Teaching Artists are provided with trauma-informed teacher training, materials to implement the GWN learning model and curriculum in their Writers Guild, and are supported through regular teaching artist group meetings. They are responsible for establishing a safe space and guiding students through the process of learning to write and record original music.

Guilds meet once weekly on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday generally between the hours of 4-6pm (teacher arrival at 3:30pm), 3:15-4:30pm (teaching arrival at 2:45pm), or earlier in the day depending on the school.

Teaching Artists Roles:

  • Guild Leader Teaching Artist — $50/hr for 4 hrs/week + compensated training session + additional $20/hr program administration hours as needed. September - April longterm commitment.

  • Substitute Teaching Artist — for those available short notice 3-6:30pm Mondays - Wednesdays

  • Recording Teaching Artist — $50/hr — 3 hrs/workshop. Recording workshops occur in January/February and in April.

We welcome applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. Programs start in September/October each year, and we assign teaching artists to programs in August. Applications completed throughout the year will be considered for teaching artist positions as they come available and for joining our team as a substitute teaching artist.

Pay: $50/hr

1:1 Artist Mentor

In our All City Mentorship guild, volunteer artist mentors are paired with a youth artist for 1-to-1 mentorship from January - June. Mentors must pass a background check and are responsible for meeting twice monthly with their mentee for those 6 months during which time you’ll guide them as they write and record an original song and help them work toward their individual goals!

We’ve had some highly meaningful and successful mentor-mentee pairs over the years, with some staying in touch for years after a student has been in programming!

Being an artist mentor is a volunteer role, though we have limited amounts of small stipends available for artists to help offset the cost of participating if needed.

Each year we pair 10-15 artist mentors with mentees in the All-City Artist Guild.

Applications are currently OPEN for the 2023 Season! Please apply by Sunday Nov. 20! Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
